Abstract: A mathematical test of the utility to forest planning of three landscape description techniques: physical feature scaling, design inventory, and timber cruise inventory is presented. Utility is defined as effectiveness in explaniing people's preferences for forested landscapes and as strength of relationships of description variables to forest planning variables.
