Abstract: A set of criteria that might be used to judge techniques designed to quantify scenic beauty is presented. Esthetics judgements of random color slides, taken in areas of ponderosa pine forest subjected to an array of vegetative manipulations from clearcut to essentially natural, were evaluated in terms of the psychologists' theory of signal detection. Results appear to be valid, reliable, and useful. This new approach is described based upon a systematic conceptual model and supported by recent research results from Arizona timberlands, including work on the Beaver Creek watershed.
